The pain from knee arthritis may be steady, or periodic, and likely the joint will become stiff after sitting or sleeping. Lack of movement or motion for any extended period of time will also aggravate the symptoms.
The joint will often be tender and some swelling may be present. Typically, knee arthritis is present in patients 50 years of age and older.
Low impact, non-weight bearing exercise is often helpful.
Nutritional supplements, such as glucosamine and chondroitin may also be helpful. In cases of mild inflammation, the Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oils) may reduce pain.
Unless we are dealing with advanced arthritis or infection, chiropractic manipulation will likely be helpful. Manipulation along with therapy, will often relieve the pain, improve join function, and restore a more normal movement to the knee.
