Where does it hurt?

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful progressive condition caused by the compression of a key nerve in the wrist. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist.

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel is a painful condition that starts in the wrist with pain, numbness/tingling, burning, and itching. It can also refer symptoms to the thumb and first 2 fingers, or even radiate symptoms upwards to the muscles of the forearm.

The pain results from compression on the median nerve, which travels through this "tunnel" in the wrist joint. There are multiple causes of this condition, with the majority of them resulting from overuse and repetitive type of work with the hand/wrist.

It is important to see your chiropractor and get an accurate diagnosis to ensure that you truly do have carpal tunnel. There are numerous other conditions that can mimic these same symptoms, which are primarily a pinched nerve in the neck, causing radiating pain/numbness/tingling down into the wrist/hand. Regardless of which diagnosis you may have, the Doctors at the Ortman Clinic have effectively treated thousands of patients with this painful condition.

Treatment consists primarily of a gentle, yet specific manipulation of the wrist muscles, ligaments and soft tissues. Therapeutic modalities such as Ultrasound and Cold Laser therapy can also be helpful with treatment. Your doctor may also recommend purchasing a nighttime wrist splint to avoid flexion at night of the wrist joint. Some studies even show Vitamin B6 to be a possible supplement to consider taking with your condition. Call the Ortman Clinic to schedule a visit.
